Varun Gupta has studied at the Light & Life Academy and the College of Wooster, USA, among others.
In 2006, he founded Travelling Lens, a company that conducted special photography workshops and vacations in remote areas of India from 2007 to 2015. In 2010, through a collaboration with the Chennai Art Event, Gupta developed his love for public art and in 2016 founded the Chennai Photo Biennale, an international visual arts festival that promotes and celebrates photography and its discourse. Here, year-round, Photo education programs take place, culminating in the festival every two years. Here he is biennial director and executive trustee.
Gupta himself is a photographer and a digital advertising professional. He is a lover of analog photography. One of his long term portrait projects is "Photo Seva" where he travels all over India to take portraits of local communities using a large format camera and B&W film. His work has been shown by several indien galleries.
