Sisi in Private: The Empress’s Photo Albums Like many women of elevated status, Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, known as Sisi, also collected portrait photographs in the 1860s. Museum Ludwig retains eighteen of her albums comprising approx. 2,000 photographs. Visible in them are members of the aristocracy – many from Elisabeth’s family –, celebrities and artworks. Sisi utilized these highly staged pictures as a means of contouring her own image.
